hospital stay #4

Sometimes a mother just has this gut feeling. I can't quite explain it. I can't attest it is always spot on. But most of the time... probably 97% of the time... my gut feeling proves me right. Thattttt or I'm stubborn. ;) Regardless, this was one of those times...

While getting ready for church on Christmas morning, the kids are all running around getting dressed, eating Nerds (thank you, Santa!)... yes, not the best breakfast... it's Christmas (in my best ghost-of-Christmas-present voice from Scrooged ever)...and I happen to catch Rowdy put a Nerd in Meg's mouth. No biggie. I quickly remove the candy and ever-so-sternnnnly explain to Drew we don't put things in Meg's mouth. Ever. Got it. Good.

Off to church. Home to change and open gifts. Meg chilled in her sling thing watching when we opened gifts. Dave and I prepped for Christmas with my family and my mom's family. My sister, Megan, comes a little early. Changes Meg. Meg does a huge belch slash gag slash who knows what. Nothing unusual. She sometimes has a hidden burp. Didn't think too much of it.

I'm not entirely sure what triggered me to check on her, but she was sleeping a lot throughout the morning and afternoon. For whatever reason, I noticed her hands and feet were more blue than usual. Still not too alarming. But what did get my gut rolling was her breathing. Now... I'm not one to be rattled or worry too much about the kids getting hurt or being sick. I just don't make a fuss because usually it's nothing. Nash is near death daily from falls off the couch, paper cuts, biting his tongue... I could go on and on. BUT I didn't care for the grunting she was doing. My first thought was those darn Nerds! Maybe Drew put another Nerd in her mouth?

Two feedings later and her grunting got worse and she started to drool. Anyone in the medical field doesn't care for difficulty breathing accompanied by drooling, and really *not* something to mess around with, especially with infants. Then I was worried. Dave and I packed Meg up and headed to the ER. I didn't even get a chance to say good-bye to the kids (or anyone for that matter). I didn't want to get anyone excited over nothing, and I sure didn't think we would be admitted!

After what felt like hours and hours and hoursssss in the emergency room, we were admitted to the Peds floor. The poor girl went through so much in the ER. Even seeing the things I've seen as an EMT, I opted to leave the room for the catheterized urine and what they told me they do allllll the time, don't be worried Mom, she'll be fineeeee... lumbar spinal tap. Dave and I tried to do what any parent would do... get as far away from that room as possible! Well, I couldn't stay away as long as the procedure took and we found ourselves in the waiting room too close for my ears. You guys... hearing your baby scream in pain from rooms away, knowing you can't do anything... I'm still not sure how I held it together. I kept looking at Dave asking him... what are they doing!? why is it taking so long!? should we go in there!? That is for sure nothing I ever want one of my children to go through again!

*sigh* fortunately all the tests she had to endure came back negative. We battled fever spikes for a couple days while in the hospital. Meg received a couple different antibiotics for nearly 3 days via IV (and was sent home with a 7-day course). She was kept so long because they wanted to rule out anything bacterial... pneumonia, meningitis... and I'm quite certain her age had a lot to do with all the testing and length of stay.

After 3 days and nights of putting her down for only probably 15 minutes at a time, we were able to go home. I'm sad I missed almost all of the kids' Christmas vacation, but more glad little Miss Meg was healthy. I'm just glad she wasn't worse. She had no breathing problems, aside from when her fever would spike, and we were sent home with ONLY antibiotics. Bummer that she has a hospitalization on her chart from now on, but what do you do. Four of our seven children have been hospitalized and I'm not liking those odds! Many thanks to those who thought of us, prayed for us, visited us, and helped with the other kiddos while we were in the hospital. We greatly appreciate all of it!
patiently waiting in the emergency room for test results
thankful for only one poke
our crazy neighbor, Linda, and Casey and Homer visited
the highlight of our days... daddy coming to talk with Meg & keep Mom company
the crew came to visit. teaching from their wonderful Child Life Services at the Children's Hospital
the kids thoroughly enjoyed the ginormous playroom
my view for most of the days
and then she was disconnected from all the machines!
and we walked as far away from the crib as possible!
obviously excited to have her home :)

Lia and Austyn made Meg a friendship bracelet while she was in the hospital and brought it for her when they visited. So adorable, and she hasn't taken it off yet!
Final Diagnosis: viral pneumonia

We're so glad to be back to normal around here. Thanks again to everyone for their help, visits, thoughts, and prayers!

etsy Sunday

Lots of randoms for today's etsy post...

IF we ever build a home, this would be kind of neat over a kitchen island or even over the kitchen table since our table needs to be massive!

Another vintage love.

Neat chair for photos as well as the house.

The girls would LOVE these nails.

My parents have an old pencil sharpener and it always created the perfect tipped pencil. Need me one!

Fun luggage to take to the hospital :)

repeat in 355 days

Every year growing up this was by far one of me and my sisters favorite mornings...
Christmas Day!

I just hope our kids enjoy it as much as we did when we were younger.

This is the after math of the morning. Dave probably took 10 toys out of the box that morning before church.

After Christmas morning mass, we came home and opened gifts with my parents and sisters. Then my mom's family came over for a late lunch and visiting. As tradition has it, this day ended in a Nerf war... as you can see in the last photo. :)

Professionals = progress !!!

After quite some time of little getting done at the old new house, the Professionals were called in. Working at the house was slow going when one of us was chasing around a little beast - keeping him off the stairs, keeping him in the house, keeping him out of the paint... you can imagine what did and did not get done!

Dave just happens to have an Aunt B who specializes in interior design/painting who was more than happy to help with her wing-woman, C. Together they do wonderful work and actually did some work in our current home that I love so I was very much looking forward to having them in the house again.

Up to this point I hadn't contributed much so it was decided the kids' rooms would be left for me. Yay! Granted, I'm a lotttt slower than B and C but Peyton's room is just about finished... with some help on the ceiling and a new, borrowed Miracle Brush. :) After the long holiday weekend and a combination of what I can only guess is a sinus infection... my doctor was very vague... not much painting in the kids' rooms got done. BUT a couple days' worth of amoxicillin, some painting yesterday, and I was very excited to see other rooms in the house with progress. Now the entry way, kitchen, dining room, AND living room are all complete and waiting for trim. And speaking of trim, the Professionals were also called in for staining and varnishing to prepare for the "contractor" ... I think that's what we call him... so the trim for the windows and doors is almost complete AND only 4 rooms of 11 remain to be painted. For 3 days of work, that is some EXCELLENT progress and I'm getting more and more excited that this move is for real and actually going to happen. I'm not sure if we have any "professional" movers in the family but we might be able to scrounge up some not-so-willing-but-able helpers :)

jogging?

Anyone who knows my family could take a guess as to how this text conversation ends...

Mom: Dad went jogging today

Me: You mean a fast walk, right?

Me: Wait, is he okay?

Mom: All projects on hold

(Dad and Mom are currently working on a multitude of woodworking projects for the old new house. Mom, get on that.)

Me: Crap!

Mom: He jogged to Kramer's on his break!

Now... the distance between Dad's work and Kramer's (the local grocery store) is approximately 0.2 miles according to Google maps. In layman maps, he cut through 2 back yards, crossed a side street, and arrived in the parking lot. Dave could probably throw a football from the parking lot of Dad's work and hit the grocery store building. With that said, I am still proud that Dad is making an effort toward some sort of exercise. Next time you'll have to "jog" on the way back from the grocery store too. ;)

"...We are to give them the recognition they deserve for their God-given authority. We are to respect and esteem and value and prize them as gifts from God."  ~Greg Laurie

In an e-mail this morning that I try to read daily, I was reminded to give credit where credit is due. I just want to thank my wonderful parents for raising me up "right" and everything they have done for me. I'm not sure what I would do without them in my life. Most of the credit for me making it to ... AHEM... twenty nine... is given to them. I love you Mom and Dad! :)

I woke up to the red roses this morning :) And Dave brought home red, pink, and yellow roses for our anniversary. Nine.
Mom would call me "spoiled" but I consider it ... blessed. This guy just never stops! And he knows better than anyone that he's stuck with me in this forever. Forever.

07.04.2010 - part 2

Mallory and Casey were not shy about trying out the jet ski but Mom... Mom needed a warm up. She and Dad took the canoe out for a spin and then came back to decide later the jet ski would be okay...iffff Dad went slow... and so... I think she had a pretty good time. The kids all got their rides as well which made their day. Although, thinking about it now... Dave and I never went out on the jet ski. Darn it! We'll definitely be doing that next time.

It was soooo nice to visit with our cousin and her husband and children. They used to live in D.C. but now reside in Jakarta. Yeah. Awesome! We only get to see them every other year (or so) but getting to see all of them was splendid. :)

This shot is Dad demonstrating his technique to donning scuba fins. Quite the sight indeed.
There's that blue-eye little monster again. Never afraid of the camera!

Before we lost our daylight, the kids did some 'fishing.' Peyton was very excited to net one in. Tayt is also showing his excitement. :)
